There are several surgical techniques to remove cataracts. The gold standard, now considered the safest and offering the fastest recovery, is phacoemulsification cataract surgery.
In this procedure, a phaco probe—essentially an ultrasound energy device—is used to liquefy the cataract and suction it out of the eye. It is minimally invasive, involving only a small incision, and a foldable lens is implanted into the eye. This technique is among the best and safest available.
Another method is femtolaser cataract surgery. In this technique, some steps of the procedure are performed using femtolaser technology, such as making incisions, breaking up the cataract core, and creating an opening in the cataract. While this method can reduce complications associated with these steps, it generally increases the overall cost of the surgery.
The cataract surgery community remains divided on whether femto laser technology offers significant additional safety or benefits compared to traditional phacoemulsification.
