I tested out the Apple Vision Pro Virtual Reality Goggles, and here is my review as an Eye Doctor

The PROS:

1. The experience is surreal; the colors and crispness are pretty mind-blowing.

2. I am super excited as a surgical trainer about the possibilities to train residents to practice complex surgical skills using Virtual reality and simulation.

The CONS:

1. After using the device for about 20 minutes, I could feel a dull pain in my eyes. Eye strain will be a major problem with prolonged use of these goggles. This is probably caused by the spasm of muscles when trying to focus on the projection lenses, which are very close to the eyes.😣

2. I do think that like most gadgets and screens, using VR goggles will dry the tear film. Staring at screens reduces blink rate, which leads to dry eye and can lead to discomfort, blurring, and eye pain.

And Finally,

Do we really need another gadget that disconnects people, especially children, from the real world? (we do not)

My Verdict:

For short-term use and for training and simulation, this technology is definitely going to be useful.

But as a personal device, I don’t recommend it! ❌
