One of the most common questions people have is: “How long can I use an eyedrop after opening it?”
It’s an important question because there’s a difference between the expiry date printed on the packaging and the actual shelf life of the eyedrop once it’s been opened.
The shelf life of an eyedrop refers to how long it remains safe and effective after it has been opened. For most eyedrops, this shelf life is about one month. After 30 days, the preservatives in the drops can evaporate or lose their effectiveness. Without preservatives, the eyedrop may become a source of infection.
Because of this, it’s crucial to use your eyedrops within a month—or at most, six weeks—after opening them. After that time, it’s safer to discard them and open a new bottle.
Thankfully, newer bottle designs for preservative-free drops are now available, allowing these drops to be used for a longer period.
So, always check the instructions on the packaging and stay aware of the timeline to ensure the health and safety of your eyes.
